WHO ARE CONSERVATION ACTION?
We are a group of experienced ornithologists working on a voluntary basis and under the scheme operated by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to catch and ring wild bird species in the UK.
We are fully committed to conservation and the preservation of the natural environment, and we have been monitoring and ringing bird species across North Dorset and the surrounding areas, as our contribution to the understanding of nature in the UK. We work as part of the National Ringing Scheme operated by the BTO, to generate data on bird movements (in particular migration) and on bird productivity and survival, which is vital for the understanding of population changes, particularly during these times of climate change.
We ring between 4,500 and 5,500 resident and migratory birds each year. The bulk of the ringing occurs between 1st August and the 31st October. We work on a daily basis (weather permitting), ringing a very high proportion of warbler species caught in transit, on their migration to their wintering quarters in Africa.
Birds of Prey and Owls are predatory species at the top of the food chain. In situations where the environment is under stress, these species have often been used to measure the health of their environment. During the winter months full-grown Red Kite and Buzzard are trapped and ringed, and all Red Kites are wing-tagged to enable individual identification of free-flying birds. During the breeding season Barn Owl and Tawny Owl breeding success is monitored, primarily by monitoring and ringing birds raised in artificial nest boxes. We are erecting boxes because the availability of natural nest sites is increasingly becoming a limiting factor for both species.
We are also committed to raising awareness in the younger generations to both conservation and the environment; and to this end we have provided demonstrations to local schools, we regularly interact with members of the public, and we also take on and train new members, in order to continue our work for many years to come.
You're welcome to follow and support our conservation efforts.
